How Bowden Golf Course Started
This golf course was designed in 1938 by a local golf expert named John C. Cotton. It was built on what used to be an airfield called Miller Field.
Building the Course with Help
Many golf courses across the United States were built during a special time called the New Deal. This was a series of programs by the government to help people find jobs during the Great Depression. One of these programs was the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA provided workers to build the course.
Macon received $55,000 to help build the course. This was a big part of the $70,000 needed. Local groups also helped raise money. They sold memberships to help get the rest of the funds.
When Was It Finished?
The golf course was completed in September 1940. It covers about 229 acres. It has 18 holes, a driving range to practice your swings, and a putting green. You can still see some old cobblestone benches there today! These benches were put in place when the course was first built.
