Bowers was officially planned and laid out in 1901. This was done by Christina and Lewis Morton Dunbar. When it first started, Bowers was known as "Bowers Station." It was an important stop for trains.

Years ago, children in Bowers had their own elementary school. Older students went to high school in nearby Darlington. In 1959, the elementary school in Bowers joined with the Darlington Elementary School.
