The Story of Box Springs
Box Springs has an interesting history, especially how it got its unique name.
Early Days and the Post Office
A post office has been serving the people of Box Springs since 1853. This shows that the community has been around for a long time. Post offices were very important for connecting people before the internet and phones.
How Box Springs Got Its Name
The name "Box Springs" comes from a local spring. A spring is a natural place where water flows out of the ground. This particular spring was "boxed in," meaning it was enclosed or protected.
The water from this boxed spring was very important for the railroad. Pipes were built to carry the water from the spring to a water tower. This tower was right next to the train tracks. Trains would stop here to fill up their steam engines with water.
Originally, the place was called "Boxed Spring." But over time, people found it easier to say "Box Springs." So, the name was changed to what it is today.
Becoming and Un-becoming a Town
In 1913, the Georgia General Assembly decided to make Box Springs an official town. This meant it had its own local government and rules. It was called the "Town of Box Springs."
However, this didn't last forever. In 1931, the town's official status was removed. This is called dissolving the town's charter. After that, Box Springs went back to being an unincorporated community.
