The Boynton Street Historic District is a special place in Eastport, Maine. It protects three very old houses on Boynton Street. These houses were built a long time ago, between 1810 and 1823. They are great examples of a building style called Federal architecture. Because they are so well-preserved, these houses were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means they are important to American history.

Exploring the Historic Houses

The three houses on Boynton Street are found on the east side of Eastport. They are close to Water Street, which used to be the main business street. Two houses are on the north side of Boynton Street. The third house is on the south side.

What Makes Them Special?

All three houses are made of wood and have two stories. They have special "hip roofs" and chimneys inside. Their outsides are covered with wood siding called clapboard. Each house has five windows across the front. They also have a main door right in the middle. Inside, you can still see many original details from the Federal period.

The Jonathan Weston House

The oldest house in the district is the Jonathan Weston House. It was built in 1810. A well-known local lawyer named Jonathan Weston built it. This house has a unique entrance. It has a round-arch window above the door. This window is called a fanlight. The door is also framed by narrow columns and a decorative piece called an entablature. Famous bird artist John James Audubon once stayed in this house. He stayed here before his trip to Labrador to study birds.

The Kilby House

The Kilby House was built in 1820. Its first owner was Daniel Kilby, who owned ships. This house also has a round-arch window above its entrance. This window is larger than the one on the Weston House. The entrance is decorated with fluted columns and a full entablature.

The Starboard House

The third house was finished in 1823. Gideon Stetson built it for Ebenezer Starboard. Its entrance also has a fanlight window. A decorative roof, called an Italianate hood, covers the entrance. This hood was added later in the 1800s.
