Boyukagha Hajiyev (born April 20, 1958 – died March 16, 2018) was a well-known Azerbaijani professional football player and manager. He is remembered for his successful career, especially for leading Neftchi Baku to historic wins.

Who Was Boyukagha Hajiyev?

Boyukagha Hajiyev started his football journey as a player. He played for Araz-Naxçıvan, a team that competed in the Soviet Second League. He played for this club from 1977 to 1991, showing his dedication to the sport.

His Journey as a Coach

After his playing career, Hajiyev became a football manager. A manager is like the head coach of a team. They decide on strategies, train players, and lead the team during games.

In 1999, he became the head coach of Araz-Naxçıvan where he once played. However, the club faced money problems and closed down. Hajiyev then moved to Iran for a few years. There, he worked with Machine Sazi, first as an assistant coach and later as the main coach. He also managed another Iranian team, Tractor Sazi, for one season.

In 2005, he returned to Azerbaijan to help coach the Azerbaijan national football team. He worked as an assistant to the head coach, Vagif Sadygov.

Winning with FC Baku

In 2006, Hajiyev came back to club football in Azerbaijan. He joined FC Baku as a consultant. However, the team's head coach was let go, and Hajiyev stepped in as a temporary coach. He led FC Baku to win all their last 8 games in a row. This amazing streak helped the team win their first-ever championship title!

He signed a one-year contract to continue as manager. But the next season, the team finished in third place. They also didn't do well in European competitions. After this, Hajiyev's time at FC Baku ended.

After a break, Hajiyev became the head coach of Standard Sumgayit. This was a tough time for him. The team was moved down to a lower league, and Hajiyev was let go.

Success with Neftchi Baku

In 2011, something exciting happened. The president of Neftchi Baku, Sadyg Sadygov, invited Hajiyev to join his club. Neftchi Baku was already the defending champion of the Azerbaijan Premier League.

Hajiyev continued their success. He led Neftchi Baku to win the championship for a second year in a row!

Making History in Europe

In 2012, Boyukagha Hajiyev made history. He became the first Azerbaijani manager to lead a team into the group stage of a major European competition. His team, Neftchi Baku, qualified for the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League group stage. They achieved this by beating a team called APOEL F.C.. This was a huge moment for Azerbaijani football!

After Neftchi Baku was knocked out of the Champions League in 2013, Hajiyev left his manager position. But he was reappointed as Neftchi's manager in January 2014.

"The Encyclopedia"

In 2014, during a press conference about the Europa League, Hajiyev made a famous statement. He said, "I'm an encyclopedia. I will open the chest, pour the cotton." Because of this, the media started calling him "The Encyclopedia." This nickname showed how much knowledge and experience he had in football.
