Life as a Duke
When Bořivoj first became duke, he faced a challenge. His cousin, Ulrich I of Brno, did not agree with his rule. Ulrich wanted to get back land that his father had lost. This disagreement led to a civil war.
Ulrich tried to get help from Emperor Henry IV. He wanted the Emperor to support his claim. But Bořivoj had already been confirmed as duke by the Emperor. So, Ulrich was forced to leave and went to Moravia.
Problems in Poland
In 1102, the Duke of Poland, Ladislaus I Herman, passed away. This caused a big argument over who would rule Poland next. Bořivoj and his cousin Svatopluk got involved. They supported one of the candidates, Zbigniew. Zbigniew was fighting against Bolesław III Wrymouth.
However, Bolesław offered money to Bořivoj. Bořivoj accepted the money and left the conflict. Svatopluk was very angry about this. He then left Bořivoj's side and took many important Bohemian leaders with him.
New Challenges
Svatopluk tried to convince Coloman of Hungary to go to war against Bořivoj. This did not work at first. But in 1107, things changed. Bořivoj's younger brother, Vladislaus, started a rebellion. With help from Coloman, Vladislaus took control of Prague.
Svatopluk had recently been captured by Emperor Henry V. The Emperor then made him release Bořivoj. After this, Svatopluk was declared the new duke.
Fighting for the Throne
In 1108, Bořivoj tried to get his throne back. He teamed up with Bolesław and Coloman. Svatopluk and Emperor Henry were attacking Coloman in Hungary. Svatopluk had to return to Bohemia to fight Bořivoj. Soon after, the Emperor invaded Poland.
During this time, Svatopluk was murdered. This happened while he was on a military campaign. Supporters of Bořivoj were responsible for his death. However, Bořivoj could not become duke again. The throne went to his brother, Vladislaus.
Reconciliation and Exile
In 1117, Bořivoj and his brother Vladislaus made peace. They ruled Bohemia together for a while. They divided the duchy between them. But in 1120, they had another disagreement. This led Bořivoj to leave Bohemia. He went to live in Hungary. He passed away there on February 2, 1124.
