Brachydiplax is a group, or genus, of beautiful flying insects called dragonflies. They belong to a big family of dragonflies known as Libellulidae.
These dragonflies live in many parts of the world. You can find them across Asia, from India all the way to China and Southeast Asia. They also live further south, in New Guinea and Australia.
Many Brachydiplax species are quite common, so you might spot them easily! Male Brachydiplax dragonflies are usually a lovely pale to medium powder blue color. The females, however, are often shades of brown. Some female dragonflies, like a type called Brachydiplax chalybea flavovittata, even have cool patterns of spots on their bodies.
Just like most dragonflies in the Libellulidae family, Brachydiplax dragonflies love to rest. They often perch on sticks, tall reeds, or stones close to water. From their resting spot, they will quickly fly out to catch other insects for food, then return to their perch.
