Bradley Robert Maxwell (born July 8, 1957 – died September 3, 2023) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was known as a great defenceman, meaning he was a skilled player who helped protect his team's goal. He even played in the 1981 Stanley Cup Finals with the Minnesota North Stars.
Brad Maxwell started his hockey journey by winning the Memorial Cup in 1977. This is a big championship for junior hockey teams in Canada. He played for the New Westminster Bruins at the time.
After his junior success, Brad was chosen by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1977 NHL draft. He was the seventh player picked overall! He spent many years with the North Stars in the early 1980s. His best season was in 1983–84, when he scored 73 points in 78 games.
Later in his career, Brad played for a few other teams. He had short times with the Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and New York Rangers. He stopped playing professional hockey in 1987.
There's a fun story about one of his trades. Brad said that his final trade, which sent him back to the North Stars from the Rangers, happened because the Rangers' general manager, Phil Esposito, lost a card game to the North Stars' general manager, Lou Nanne!
Life After Hockey
After retiring from playing hockey, Brad Maxwell started his own business. It was called Brad Maxwell Cabinets & Construction and was located in Minnesota.
He also stayed involved with hockey. Brad helped organize and played in charity games with other former North Stars players. He even helped gather the North Stars alumni team for a special event in 2016. This event was part of the 2016 NHL Stadium Series, where the Minnesota Wild played against the Chicago Blackhawks. Before the main game, former players from the Blackhawks played against a team of North Stars and Wild alumni.
Brad Maxwell passed away on September 3, 2023, at the age of 66.
