Bradenville's History

Bradenville was not always called Bradenville. Its first name was St. Clair City. The town became important because of coal mining and a process called coking. Coking turns coal into a fuel called coke. These operations started in 1886.

Several companies ran the mines and coke works over the years. These included St. Clair Mine & Coke Works and Bradenville Mine & Coke Works. Around 1914, a company owned by Mathias W. Saxman built about 40 houses for workers. They also built a company store in the town.

By 1915, the Bradenville Mine was very busy. It employed 195 people. The mine produced over 110,000 tons of coal. It also had 194 beehive coke ovens, which were used to make coke. The Bradenville Mine stopped working in 1951. Today, you can still see the old company houses and the store. However, none of the original mine buildings are left.

What is Mine Subsidence?

Mine subsidence happens when the ground above an underground mine collapses. This can create holes or sinking areas on the surface. It often occurs over old, abandoned mines. When the ground sinks, it can damage buildings, homes, and roads.

Bradenville has had many mine subsidence problems. Over 20 years before 2018, there were 17 such events. These problems are thought to be linked to the Derry No. 1 Deep Mine. This mine was owned by Marcus W. Saxman's Latrobe-Connellsville Coal & Coke Company. It mined coal right under the town.

To help fix this issue, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection started a big project in 2020. They spent $5.8 million to help stabilize about 150 homes. These homes were affected by the ground sinking because of the old mines.
