The Bradford-Huntington House is a very old and important house in Norwich, Connecticut. It is located in the historic Norwichtown area. This house started being built around 1691, making it one of the oldest homes still standing in the region! A famous person named Jabez Huntington, who was an officer during the American Revolutionary War, once owned it. It is even said that George Washington visited this house. What is the Bradford-Huntington House?
The Bradford-Huntington House is a historic home in Norwich, Connecticut. It sits on Huntington Lane, not far from the Norwichtown green. The house is built on a strong stone foundation. It has two large brick fireplaces and chimneys. These are found in the middle of its two main sections.
A Glimpse Inside the Old House
This house is 2-1/2 stories tall. It has a special roof style called a gambrel roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. Inside, you can find many original features that are still in great shape. These include wide wooden floorboards. There is also a winding staircase in the front entryway.
Who Lived Here? A Look at Its History
The oldest part of the house was built around 1691. At that time, it was called the "new dwelling house" of John Bradford. Over the years, the house grew bigger. Different parts were added by members of the Huntington family. The Huntingtons were some of the first people to settle in Norwich.
Jabez Huntington owned the house in the late 1700s. He was a very important person during the American Revolutionary War. He reached the highest rank in the state's army, becoming a major general.
Did George Washington Really Visit?
Because of his important role, Jabez Huntington is believed to have hosted famous guests. It is thought that both George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette visited him at this house. These visits would have been during the American Revolutionary War.
