Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Brahmo Samaj is a special group that started in India in the 1800s. It was a movement to make changes and improvements within the Hindu religion. It aimed to fix some of the problems and old customs in Indian society at that time.

History of Brahmo Samaj

In the 1800s, Indian society faced many social and religious challenges. To help solve these problems, several groups were formed. These groups were often called "samajs." Some examples include the Prarthana Samaj and the Satya Shodhak Samaj.

The Brahmo Samaj was one of these important groups. It was started by a wise leader named Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 1828. Many people see this as the first time Indians tried to improve their own religion and stop harmful practices. Later, under the leadership of Keshab Chandra Sen, the Brahmo Samaj grew a lot. It opened many branches across India, helping to bring about positive changes in society.

Important Changes It Brought

The Brahmo Samaj worked hard to bring about many important changes. Here are some of them:

  • It taught that there is only one God, not many.
  • It was against expensive sacrifices and rituals that didn't seem to have much meaning.
  • It believed that God is everywhere.
  • It supported people from different castes marrying each other.
  • It also supported widows getting remarried.
  • It was strongly against child marriage.
  • It opposed polygamy, which is when one person is married to many others at the same time.

What Brahmo Samaj Believes

The Brahmo Samaj has some key beliefs that all its followers share:

  • Followers of Brahmo Samaj do not believe that any single holy book or scripture is the only authority.
  • They do not believe in Avatars. Avatars are gods taking on a human or animal form.
  • Brahmo Samaj members speak out against polytheism. This is the belief in many gods. They also do not believe in worshipping idols or statues.
  • They are against the strict rules and divisions of the caste system.
  • For Brahmo Samaj members, believing in the ideas of Karma and rebirth is a choice. It is not a strict rule.
