Branchville got its name because it was where a special railroad line, or "branch," started. This town is home to the world's oldest railroad junction. A junction is where two or more railroad tracks meet.
The First Railroad Junction
The railroad junction in Branchville was built in 1828. It connected Charleston to Branchville. This route was part of the country's very first scheduled train service. For over 100 years, trains and passengers were a big part of Branchville's economy.
Historic Train Depot
The Southern Railway Passenger Depot is a very old train station in Branchville. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it is an important historical building.
