Branishte Peak facts for kids
Branishte Peak is a tall, ice-covered mountain in Antarctica. It stands about 2,000 meters (or 6,560 feet) high! This peak is part of the Gromshin Heights, which is on the eastern side of the northern Sentinel Range. The Sentinel Range itself is found within the huge Ellsworth Mountains.
Branishte Peak is surrounded by large ice formations. To its north is the Yamen Glacier, a slow-moving river of ice. To the east, you'll find the vast Rutford Ice Stream, which is like a very wide, fast-moving glacier. And to the southwest, there's the Vicha Glacier.
This icy peak gets its name from a place far away: a small town called Branishte in Northeastern Bulgaria.
Where is Branishte Peak?
Branishte Peak is located in a very cold and remote part of Antarctica. Its exact spot is at 77°40′31.8″S, 85°33′40″W. This means it's deep in the southern part of the world, close to the South Pole.
The peak is surrounded by other mountains in the Ellsworth range. It is about 11.45 kilometers (7.1 miles) northeast of Mount Warren. It's also around 11.75 kilometers (7.3 miles) east-southeast of Mount Washburn and 10.9 kilometers (6.8 miles) south-southeast of Mount Mogensen.
Scientists from the United States first mapped this area in 1961. This helped us learn more about these amazing, icy landscapes.
