River's Name History
The Bras du Nord river was once called "Rivière Falardeau." This name came from the Falardeau township in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
Why the Name Changed
The old name honored Antoine-Sébastien Falardeau. He was a famous painter from Quebec. He was born in 1822 and passed away in 1889. Falardeau spent most of his painting career in Italy. He was known for making excellent copies of famous paintings.
In 1846, Falardeau moved to Florence, Italy. He became very well-known there. He even returned to Canada briefly in 1862 and 1882 to show his art. The Canadian government asked him to paint a portrait of Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau. He was a former leader of Quebec.
The name of the river was officially changed to "Bras du Nord" on April 8, 1975. This change was made by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which names places in Quebec.
