A Brasiguaio (in Portuguese) or brasiguayo (in Spanish) is a person from Brazil who has moved to Paraguay. It also refers to their children and grandchildren. This term is used for people who have strong connections to both Brazil and Paraguay.

Most Brasiguaios live in the southeastern parts of Paraguay. These areas are called Canindeyú and Alto Paraná. They are right next to the border with Brazil. Many of them moved from Brazil around the 1960s. As of 2001, there were about 455,000 Brasiguaios. This means they made up about one-tenth, or 10%, of Paraguay's total population.

Who are the Brasiguaios?

In some areas near the border, Brasiguaios and their families make up more than 90% of the people. In these places, Portuguese is often still their main language. For example, in the city of San Alberto de Mbaracayú, about 80% of its 23,000 residents have Brazilian roots.

Where do they come from?

Most Brasiguaios originally came from the southern states of Brazil. These states are Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.

What is their background?

Most Brasiguaios are ethnically White. Many of them have ancestors from Germany, Italy, or Poland. These families moved to Brazil many years ago.
