A Look Back at Brave's History
The Story of Dunkard Creek
Long ago, in the early 1900s, a company built a special cooling system on a stream called Dunkard Creek in Brave. This system used pipes at the bottom of the creek and two small dams. The dams helped make sure there was always enough water flowing to cool the gas at a nearby station.
The gas station closed in 1959, but the old cooling system was left behind. Over time, it caused some problems for the environment. The dams made it hard for fish to swim freely up and down the creek. Also, the system may have helped a type of harmful algae grow, which caused many fish to die in 2009.
To fix these issues, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service stepped in. In 2010, they worked with the landowners to remove both dams. This project helped the creek become healthier. It allowed fish to move around again and improved the water quality for all the animals living there.
