Brazil is a small, unincorporated community in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place with a shared identity but no local government of its own.
Brazil is located along Mississippi Highway 321. You can find it about 8 miles (13 km) north of Webb. It's also about 12 miles (19 km) south of Lambert. People sometimes call this community by other names, like Lay or Stover.
Getting Around: Transportation
Even though the famous Amtrak train, the City of New Orleans, passes through Brazil, it doesn't stop there. This train travels between New Orleans and Chicago.
If you wanted to catch a train, the closest station is in Marks. Marks is about 18 miles (29 km) north of Brazil.
Learning and Schools
Students in Brazil attend schools within the West Tallahatchie School District. The local schools for the community are R. H. Bearden School and West Tallahatchie High School.
History of Brazil's Schools
Brazil used to have its own school, called the Brazil Consolidated School. The final building for this school was built in 1936. It cost $50,000 to build.
In the 1940s, there were plans to make the school bigger. Sadly, an earlier Brazil school building was destroyed by a fire. The Brazil school closed in 1965 because not enough students were attending. Only 40 students were registered that year. After it closed, the school building was put up for sale.
For students who want to continue their education after high school, Coahoma Community College is the designated community college for the area.
