History of Webb

How Webb Got Its Name

In 1882, a man named Judge James L.A. Webb ran the only store in the area. He was a veteran of the American Civil War and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Later, the Hood Masonic Lodge was built. The town was officially made a town in 1905. It was later renamed Webb to honor Judge Webb.

Early Transportation and Leaders

In the early days, most food and supplies came to Hood by flat-bottom boat. These boats traveled down the river from Friars Point to Sharkey, Mississippi. The Cassidy Bayou was a waterway that the government kept clear for boats.

In July 2001, Earnestine Dixon made history. She became the first African American mayor of Webb. She served one term, from 2001 to 2005.
