History of Webb
Webb was first settled around 1880. The first post office opened in 1880. It was called Hood after one of the early settlers.
How Webb Got Its Name
In 1882, a man named Judge James L.A. Webb ran the only store in the area. He was a veteran of the American Civil War and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Later, the Hood Masonic Lodge was built. The town was officially made a town in 1905. It was later renamed Webb to honor Judge Webb.
Early Transportation and Leaders
In the early days, most food and supplies came to Hood by flat-bottom boat. These boats traveled down the river from Friars Point to Sharkey, Mississippi. The Cassidy Bayou was a waterway that the government kept clear for boats.
In July 2001, Earnestine Dixon made history. She became the first African American mayor of Webb. She served one term, from 2001 to 2005.

Education in Webb
The schools in Webb are part of the West Tallahatchie School District. Students in the area attend R. H. Bearden Elementary School and West Tallahatchie High School.
Changes in Local Schools
Before 1988, Sumner Elementary School served students from Webb and Sumner. West District Middle School was the middle school for the area. In 1988, West District Middle became a school for grades 3-8. Sumner Elementary then became a school for Kindergarten through grade 2 only.
As of 2002, some children from Webb also went to private schools. These included the North Sunflower Academy in unincorporated Sunflower County. Another option was Strider Academy in Charleston, which closed in 2018.
Notable People from Webb
- Mamie Till Mobley — She was the mother of Emmett Till. She was born in Webb and later moved to Argo, Illinois in 1924.
