Roads and Railways

Breadalbane is close to the Hume Highway. This big road connects Sydney and Melbourne. Before 1993, the highway went right through the village. But now, a new part of the road goes around it.

The village also has a railway station. It's on the Main Southern Railway. This train line goes between Sydney and Melbourne. The first major road into Breadalbane was the Great South Road. It was finished in 1827.

Today, Breadalbane is near the start of the Federal Highway. This road branches off the Hume Highway. It goes directly to Canberra, Australia's capital city. Canberra is where the Australian Parliament meets.

Village History

Breadalbane is an historic village. It is located on the Old Hume Highway. Other nearby historic places include Cullerin and Gunning.

Not much is left in Breadalbane today. There are only a few houses. In the past, the village had places to stay and a pub. There was also a service station and a railway station. These services are no longer open. However, the old hotel and service station buildings are still standing. They are now used as private homes.

The railway station opened in 1875. It closed in 1974. The signal box was used until 1979. All signs of the station are gone now. But a loading bank is still there.

The Breadalbane Inn

The first license for the Breadalbane Inn was given on June 28, 1838. It was given to a Mr. John Read. The Inn became a family home after the Hume Highway was moved. Over time, it fell into disrepair.

Recently, the building was restored. During the restoration, old items from the colonial era were found.

In 1849, the Breadalbane Inn was robbed. Three armed men held up the owner, Mr. J. Fletcher. They stole 8 pounds in cash and some other items.
