History of Breitenbach am Inn
Breitenbach has a very long history. It was first mentioned around 800 AD. Its parish church, St. Peter, is one of the oldest churches in all of Tyrol. Breitenbach was one of three "original parishes" of Freising in Tyrol.
Early Mentions and Boundaries
The town first appeared in official papers in 1157. It was listed as a parish of the Kanonikerstift St. Andrae in Freising. The original area of Breitenbach was very large. It included places like Brandenberg and Steinberg. These areas later became separate parishes by 1891.
For over 900 years, the Inn River was an important border. It separated the land of the Archdiocese of Salzburg from Freising. Breitenbach was on the Freising side. This meant that Breitenbach shared its history with the Duchy of Bavaria until 1504.
Farming and Trade by the Inn River
Breitenbach was mainly a farming village for a long time. People grew their own food and made what they needed. Things they couldn't make were brought in by ships on the Inn River. There was even a "Schopper establishment" here. This was a repair shop for the Inn River boats. The name "Schopper host" for a local inn still reminds us of this history.
The Arrival of the Railway and Bridge
Around 1860, the Inn Railway was built. This brought a huge economic boost to the area. However, Breitenbach was left out at first. This was because there was no bridge to cross the river. People had to use a ferry to get to Kundl on the other side.
In 1894, the town council started talking about building a bridge. The bridge finally opened in 1896. This helped Breitenbach connect better with other towns. The town's boundaries have been mostly the same since the mid-1800s. Breitenbach also has many scattered small villages. It used to have three elementary schools. Today, it has two elementary schools and one secondary school.
