Brennan's is a famous Creole restaurant. You can find it in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is known for its delicious food and long history.

About Brennan's Restaurant

A Look at Its History

Brennan's restaurant first opened in 1946. It was started by Owen Brennan. He was a restaurateur from New Orleans. The restaurant was originally called the Vieux Carré. It was located on Bourbon Street. In 1956, Brennan's moved to its current home.

A Special Building

The building where Brennan's is now located is very old. It is a two-story mansion. It was built in 1795. The building was first made for Don José Faurie. Later, it became the first bank in Louisiana. This bank was called the Banque de la Louisiane.

From 1841 to 1891, the Morphy family owned the mansion. A famous chess player, Paul Morphy, lived there. He was thought to be the world chess champion. He lived in the house until he passed away in 1884.

In 1920, William Ratcliffe Irby gave the building to Tulane University. Owen Brennan leased the building in 1954. He opened Brennan's there the next year. The restaurant bought the building in 1984.

Changes Over Time

After Owen Brennan passed away, his family inherited the restaurant. In 1973, the family had some disagreements. This led to a split in their businesses. The original Brennan's in New Orleans stayed with Owen's widow and children. Other restaurants in New Orleans, Houston, and Dallas became separate. These were known as the Brennan Family Restaurants.

Facing a Storm

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The French Quarter did not flood much. However, Brennan's still had serious damage. Food from upstairs refrigerators melted. It leaked onto the lower floors. The restaurant's large wine cellar also lost power. This ruined their entire collection of wine.

After a lot of repairs, Brennan's reopened on June 8, 2006. The restaurant closed again on June 28, 2013. New owners, Terry White and Ralph Brennan, bought the building. Ralph Brennan is a cousin of the former owners.

The historic building had more major renovations. This work took over a year. The new Brennan's finally opened in the fall of 2014.
