Brent F. Anderson (born October 15, 1932 – died June 18, 2013) was an American politician and an electrical engineer. He was the fourth mayor of West Valley City, Utah. He served as mayor from 1987 until 1994.
Early Life and Education
Brent F. Anderson was born in a place called Granger, Utah. This community later became part of West Valley City. His parents were Lester and LaPreal Anderson.
In 1961, he married Delores Ashby in the Salt Lake Temple. They had four children and later, 13 grandchildren.
Anderson served in the U.S. Navy to protect his country. After his military service, he went to the University of Utah. He earned a degree in electrical engineering. This means he studied how electricity works and how to design electrical systems. He used his skills to work for companies like Sperry-Univac and UNISYS.
Becoming a City Leader
Brent Anderson was involved with West Valley City from its very beginning. The city was officially formed, or incorporated, in 1980. This means it became its own official city.
In 1982, West Valley City changed how its government worked. Anderson was chosen to be part of the first-ever West Valley City Council. A city council is a group of people who help make important decisions for the city.
In January 1986, his fellow council members chose him for a special role. He became the mayor pro tem. This means he could act as mayor if the main mayor was not available.
Serving as Mayor
The mayor at the time, Michael Embley, resigned in May 1987. The city council then picked Brent Anderson to take his place as mayor.
Later that year, Anderson won a special election. He ran against another council member, Gearld L. Wright. This win allowed him to finish the rest of the previous mayor's term.
In the 1989 election, Mayor Anderson ran for re-election. His two opponents decided not to run against him. So, he won the election without anyone opposing him.
On July 6, 1993, Mayor Anderson announced he would not run for mayor again. He finished his time as mayor in January 1994.
What He Achieved as Mayor
During Brent Anderson's time as mayor, West Valley City grew and changed a lot.
- The city government moved into a brand new city hall building.
- A new place for golf, the West Ridge Golf Course, was built.
- Work began on a major road called Bangerter Highway. This highway helps people travel around the area.
After being mayor, Anderson moved to Draper, Utah. There, he continued to serve his community. He worked on their planning commission, helping to decide how the city should develop.
