Who is Judge Brian A. Jackson?

His Early Life and School

Brian A. Jackson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1960. He went to Xavier University of Louisiana and earned a degree in 1982. After that, he studied law at Southern University Law Center, getting his law degree in 1985. He also earned another law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000. This special degree was in international and comparative law.

What He Did Before Becoming a Judge

After finishing law school in 1985, Brian Jackson started his career. He worked for the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service in Los Angeles. He helped with legal matters there until 1987.

Then, he moved to Washington, D.C.. He worked as an assistant general counsel for the same service. In 1988, he returned to New Orleans. He joined the United States Attorney's office. He worked as a Special Assistant United States Attorney and later as an Assistant United States Attorney.

From 1992 to 1994, Jackson worked in the United States Department of Justice. He was an assistant director for a special review team. Later, from 1994 to 2002, he worked in the U.S. Attorney's office in Louisiana. He was a First Assistant United States Attorney. For a short time in 2001, he was the interim United States Attorney. He also spent time in Washington, D.C., working for the United States Deputy Attorney General.

From 2002 to 2010, Brian Jackson worked at a private law firm called Liskow & Lewis. He was a partner there. This means he was one of the main lawyers in the firm.

Becoming a Federal Judge

How He Was Chosen

In January 2009, Senator Mary Landrieu suggested Brian Jackson become a United States Attorney. However, she later thought he would be a great district judge. This was because of his many years of experience in federal courts.

Senator Landrieu then officially recommended him to President Barack Obama. On October 29, 2009, President Obama nominated Jackson for the judge position. This position became open when Judge Frank Joseph Polozola took senior status in 2007. Senior status means a judge can still hear cases but with a reduced workload.

His Confirmation and Service

Jackson's nomination faced some delays. But eventually, the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing. The Senate voted to confirm him on June 15, 2010. The vote was almost unanimous, 96–0. He officially became a judge on the same day.

On July 18, 2011, he became the chief judge of the court. This happened after the death of Judge Ralph E. Tyson. He served as chief judge until July 17, 2018.
