Brian Banks's Public Service Career
Starting Out in His Career
Brian Banks's campaign website once mentioned he worked at a law firm. It also said he was a part-time professor at Baker College. However, an employee from the law firm stated he only worked there briefly. He was a law clerk for a few months before leaving.
Serving in the Michigan House
In 2012, Brian Banks won the Democratic primary election. He defeated Scott Benson by a small number of votes. This win allowed him to represent the 1st district in the Michigan House of Representatives. Even though a local group did not support him, he won the general election.
He won his primary election again in 2014 and 2016. As the leader of the Detroit Caucus, he worked with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. He also worked with other lawmakers and groups in Lansing. This helped him raise a lot of money for his campaigns. In the November 2016 general election, Banks won with 66 percent of the votes.
Why He Left Office
On February 6, 2017, Brian Banks stepped down from his position. He admitted to a mistake related to his financial records. As part of an agreement, other serious accusations against him were dropped. After his resignation, Governor Rick Snyder called for a special election. This election was held to find someone new to fill his seat.
Running for State Senate
In August 2017, Brian Banks prepared to run for the Michigan Senate. He aimed for the 2nd District seat. This was because the current senator, Bert Johnson, was facing legal issues. In the August 2018 election, Banks did not win. The new candidates, Adam Hollier and Abraham Aiyash, won instead.
Trying for County Commissioner
In 2022, Banks ran for the District 1 seat on the Wayne County Commission. He listed a post office box in Grosse Pointe as his address. The current Commissioner, Tim Killeen, won the primary election. Killeen received 61.6% of the votes, while Banks received 38.1%.
Working in Business
In 2019, Brian Banks started working for Promise Schools. This company runs a school for students from kindergarten to eighth grade. His job was to help recruit students for the School District of the City of Highland Park.
