Tenisha Renee Yancey was born on August 29, 1976. She is a lawyer and a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives. She represented the 1st House District in Michigan. This district covers parts of Detroit and Harper Woods. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Tenisha Yancey was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in a special election in 2017. This election was held to fill a spot that became open. She served in this role until the end of 2022.

About Tenisha Yancey's Life
Tenisha Yancey was born in Detroit, Michigan. She went to Eastern Michigan University for her first degree. Later, she studied law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. She earned her law degree in 2012.
After becoming a lawyer, she worked for the Wayne County Prosecutor's office. She also worked for other government offices in Wayne County. She has a son named Jaylen. Her uncle is Jimmy Settles, who was a leader in the United Auto Workers union.
Her Path in Politics
Starting in Local Government
Before joining the state legislature, Tenisha Yancey was involved in local politics. On November 8, 2016, she was elected to the Harper Woods School Board. This board helps make decisions for the schools in Harper Woods. She used her experience in the legal system to help her work on the board.
Becoming a State Representative
In 2017, a special election was held for the 1st House District in Michigan. This election was needed because the previous representative had left the position. Tenisha Yancey decided to run for this open seat.
She won the special primary election with 33 percent of the votes. She then went on to win the special general election on November 8, 2017. In that election, she received 7,266 votes, which was about 71% of all the votes. This made her the new representative for the 1st House District.

In 2022, Tenisha Yancey decided to run for a different kind of public office. She filed to become a judge for the 36th District Court. She also briefly considered running for judge of the 3rd Circuit Court before focusing on the 36th District Court.
