Brian Arthur Roland Binley (born April 1, 1942 – died December 25, 2020) was a British Conservative Party politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Northampton South from 2005 to 2015. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the UK Parliament.
Early Life and Start in Politics
Brian Binley grew up in Finedon, Northamptonshire. He went to Finedon Mulso Secondary Modern School. In 1958, when he was 16, he joined the Conservative Party.
From 1965 to 1968, he helped organize the National Young Conservatives. This group helps young people get involved in politics. Later, he started his own company, BCC Marketing Services Ltd, and was its chairman from 1988 to 2001.
Time as an MP
Before becoming an MP, Brian Binley helped with the Conservative Party's election campaign in Wyre Forest in 1997. That same year, he was elected to the Northamptonshire County Council. This council helps manage local services in Northamptonshire.
In 2005, he was chosen to run for Parliament in Northampton South. He won the election, beating the sitting Labour MP, Tony Clarke. Brian Binley gave his first speech in Parliament on May 25, 2005.
He was re-elected in the 2010 general election. He won with an even bigger majority of votes.
During his time as an MP, Brian Binley sometimes spoke out about issues within his own party. For example, he shared his concerns about how some party leaders were handling certain situations. He also questioned some decisions made by the Prime Minister at the time, David Cameron.
Personal Life
Brian Binley lived in the area he represented for over 20 years. He had two grown sons.
In 2006, he experienced identity theft. This is when someone uses your personal information without permission. Someone tried to steal money from his bank account while he was in India.
In May 2007, he received a six-month driving ban. This happened because he had too many penalty points on his driving licence.
In January 2013, Brian Binley shared that he was battling a type of cancer called "low-grade lymphoma." This cancer affects white blood cells. He underwent chemotherapy for treatment. In July 2013, he announced that he would not run for re-election in 2015.
Brian Binley passed away on December 25, 2020, at the age of 78. He died at Northampton General Hospital.
