Acting Career
Getting Started in Movies
Brian Hooks began his acting journey in 1996. His first big role was in the movie Phat Beach. The movie was a success and helped him get parts in other films. He appeared in comedies like High School High (1996) and Austin Powers: The Spy Who ... Me (1999). He also acted in dramas like Bulworth (1998) and Beloved (1998).
During this time, Brian also appeared on popular TV shows. He had guest roles on shows like NYPD Blue, Moesha, ER, and The Parkers. These roles showed that he could act in both funny and serious parts.
Becoming a Movie Star
In 2000, Brian Hooks starred in the comedy movie 3 Strikes. After this, he became a star in many films that were released directly on DVD. He didn't just act in these movies; he also helped produce them. This means he was involved in making the movie from start to finish. Some of these films included Nothin’ 2 Lose (2000) and The Luau (2001).
Because he was so successful with these movies, some media outlets called him the “King of DVD.”
Behind the Camera
Brian became interested in more than just acting. He wanted to learn about producing and directing. He learned that making low-budget movies could be very successful. A low-budget movie is made with less money than a big Hollywood film.
He started his own production company to create independent films. In 2007, he produced, co-wrote, and starred in the movie Dead Tone. He also produced the film I Do… I Did in 2009. For a while, he was also a co-host on a TV show about relationships.
In 2021, Brian launched a new production company called Left of Bang Entertainment. This company not only makes movies but also helps young people. It offers free classes and guidance for kids from inner-city neighborhoods who are interested in film.
