Brian Thomas Lopes (born September 6, 1971, in Mission Viejo, California) is a famous professional mountain bike racer. He is especially known for his skills in four-cross racing. Brian started riding BMX bikes when he was a kid and became a professional rider at just seventeen years old.

Early Life and BMX Beginnings

Brian Lopes was born in Mission Viejo, California, in 1971. From a young age, he loved riding bikes. He began his journey in the world of cycling with BMX bikes. BMX racing is a thrilling sport where riders race on dirt tracks with jumps and obstacles. Brian quickly showed great talent. He turned professional in BMX when he was only 17 years old, which is a big achievement!

Conquering the Mountain Bike World

In 1993, Brian decided to try a new challenge: mountain biking. This sport involves riding bikes off-road, often on rough terrain, hills, and trails. Brian quickly adapted his skills from BMX to mountain biking. He became a specialist in several exciting mountain bike disciplines. These included four-cross, dual slalom, enduro, and downhill racing.

Major Championships and Records

Brian Lopes achieved incredible success in mountain biking. He won a total of 18 major titles during his career. These included 9 NORBA National Championships. NORBA stands for the National Off-Road Bicycle Association in the USA. He also earned 6 UCI World Cup wins. The UCI is the international governing body for sports cycling.

Even more impressively, Brian won 4 UCI World Championship titles. These championships are where the best riders from around the world compete. Brian also set world records for "bunny hopping." This is a trick where a rider lifts both wheels off the ground without hitting a ramp. He held records for both how far and how high he could bunny hop!

One notable victory was on April 13, 2012. Brian won the very first race of the new cross-country eliminator World Cup series. This exciting event took place in Houffalize, Belgium.
