Brian Warboys, born on April 30, 1942, is a British expert in computers. He was a Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Manchester. This means he taught and researched how to design and build computer programs.

Before becoming a professor, he worked for a big computer company called ICL. There, he helped create an important computer program called the VME operating system. Even after retiring, he still does research. He has also written several non-fiction books.

Building Computer Brains: ICL VME

Brian Warboys worked at ICL, a major computer company, from 1963 to 1985. During the 1970s, he was the main designer for something called VME.

VME was an "operating system." Think of an operating system like the brain of a computer. It's the main program that lets all other programs run. VME was known for being advanced and easy to use. Many computer experts thought it was even better than similar systems from other companies like IBM.

Teaching and Research at Manchester

As a Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Manchester, Brian Warboys studied how to make very large computer systems better. He focused on how these systems could change and improve, even while they were running. This is called "dynamic evolution."

The Informatics Process Group

In 1991, he started a group called the Informatics Process Group (IPG). This group worked on using "process modeling." This means they created maps or plans for how computer software is built and changed. Their goal was to help organizations develop software more effectively.

Important Research Projects

Brian Warboys also led or was part of many important research projects. These projects often involved working with other experts across Europe.

For example, he worked on the ESPRIT program, which was a big European project for research in information technology. He also helped with projects like PROMOTER, PIE, and Archware. These projects all aimed to improve how software is designed, developed, and updated.

Special Recognition

In 1984, Brian Warboys was given a special honor. He was named the first ICL Fellow. This was a big deal because it recognized his important contributions to the company and the field of computing.
