Captain Brian Gilmore Young was a brave officer in the Royal Navy. He was born on September 25, 1930, and passed away on December 24, 2009. He was a skilled pilot for the navy and a hero of the Falklands War. He received a special award called the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his courage.

Becoming a Naval Officer

Brian Young joined the Royal Navy in 1944 when he was just 14 years old. He started as a cadet, which is like a student training to become an officer. He studied at special schools in Eaton Hall and Dartmouth.

After his training, he served on several important ships. These included the huge battleship King George V, the aircraft carrier Theseus, and the smaller ship Wren.

Learning to Fly Jets

From 1954 to 1958, Brian Young learned how to fly airplanes in the United States. He became a naval aviator, meaning he flew planes for the navy. He flew Hawker Sea Hawk jet fighters.

He flew these jets from big aircraft carriers like Albion, Centaur, Bulwark, and Ark Royal. He even took part in air attacks in Egypt during the Suez War.

Hero in the Falklands War

One of Captain Young's most important roles was during the Falklands War in 1982. He was the captain of a destroyer ship called Antrim.

He also led a group of ships on a very important mission. This mission was called Operation Paraquet. Their goal was to take back South Georgia, an island that had been captured. Captain Young's leadership helped make this mission a success.
