The Brick Store, located at 21 Lisbon Road in Bath, New Hampshire, is a very special place. It claims to be the oldest general store in the United States that has been open continuously. This means it has been selling things to people without stopping for a very long time!

History of the Brick Store

This two-story brick building is quite old. Experts believe it was built around 1790. Some records suggest it was built in 1804. Its design, known as "Federal architecture," fits this time period. We know for sure it was standing in 1814.

In 1824, the store was damaged by a fire. When it was repaired, some new design elements were added. These new parts were in a style called "Greek Revival." Many brick buildings were built in Bath long ago. But the Brick Store is the only old commercial building of its kind that is still standing today.

In 1985, the Brick Store was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical building in the United States.

What Makes the Store Special?

The Brick Store sits right next to the Ammonoosuc River. It is a famous landmark in northern New Hampshire. For many years, it has been more than just a store. It sells groceries, gas, and drinks.

But it's also known for its unique treats! People love its buttermilk donuts and smoked meats. The store is especially famous for its smoked cheese and smoked pepperoni.

The Brick Store is also a popular stop for politicians. People running for president often visit it during their campaigns. For example, Barack Obama visited the store with his daughters on May 28, 2007, when he was campaigning.

Challenges and Reopening

In the early 2000s, the Brick Store faced some tough times. The economy was not doing well. Also, more people started shopping at bigger chain stores. This meant fewer local customers for the Brick Store.

Things got even harder when the Bath Covered Bridge closed. The bridge was shut down for 20 months between 2012 and 2014. This made it difficult for customers to reach the store.

Because of these challenges, the store had to be sold. It was bought at an auction in July 2016. The new owners worked hard to fix up the store. They made sure to keep its historic look and feel. The Brick Store proudly reopened its doors in July 2017. It continues to serve its community and welcome visitors.
