The New Haven-Weybridge Rattling Bridge is a historic bridge in Vermont. It crosses the Otter Creek river. This bridge connects the towns of Weybridge and New Haven. It links Town Highway 7 (Pearson Road) in New Haven with Town Highway 11 (Morgan Horse Farm Road) in Weybridge.

The American Bridge Company built this bridge in 1908. It is a great example of a "rivet-connected lattice truss" bridge. This means its parts are held together with strong metal pins called rivets. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It is officially known there as Bridge 26.

About the Rattling Bridge

This old bridge is found in the southwestern part of New Haven. It is also in the northeastern part of Weybridge. The Otter Creek river forms the border between these two towns. The bridge runs north to south. It crosses the river just east of the Huntington Falls dam.

Bridge Design and Size

The New Haven-Weybridge Rattling Bridge is a single-span metal truss bridge. Its design is similar to a "double-intersection Warren truss" or a "Whipple truss." The bridge is about 149 feet (45 meters) long. Its roadway is about 16 feet (4.9 meters) wide, which is wide enough for one lane of traffic.

The entrance parts of the bridge are about 16 feet 6 inches (5.03 meters) tall in the middle. They have rounded corners. All the main parts of the bridge are joined together using rivets.

Why is it Called the Rattling Bridge?

The bridge got its unique name from its deck boards. These wooden boards were laid loosely on the bridge. When cars or wagons drove over them, the boards would rattle and make noise. This is how it became known as the "Rattling Bridge."

History of the Bridge

The American Bridge Company built this bridge in 1908. This was part of a plan by the state of Vermont. The plan, which started in 1892, aimed to make the state's transportation better.

The Road It Carries

The road that the bridge carries was originally called the Waltham Pike. This road opened in 1808. It was the very first road to go through the town of Weybridge.

Who Owns and Maintains It?

The town of Weybridge paid most of the money to build the bridge. Today, both Weybridge and New Haven towns own the bridge together. They also share the job of keeping it in good condition.
