The Bridges's degu (Octodon bridgesii) is a type of rodent that lives in southern Chile. It belongs to the Octodontidae family, which includes other degus. This small animal was named after Thomas Bridges, a botanist.

What is a Bridges's Degu?

Bridges's degu is a unique rodent. It is different from its close relative, the common degu. One big difference is that Bridges's degu is nocturnal. This means it is active mostly at night, while the common degu is active during the day.

Scientists once thought that another type of degu, called Ricardo Ojeda's degu (O. ricardojedai), was the same as Bridges's degu. Ricardo Ojeda's degu lives in Argentina and Chile. However, in 2020, scientists found that they are actually two different species.

Where do Bridges's Degus Live?

Bridges's degu lives in Chile, but it is not as common as the common degu. You can find them in places with rocks and forests. They also live in some open farmland areas.

These degus are not very good at digging tunnels, unlike some other rodents. But they are good at climbing trees and rocks. Sadly, their homes are shrinking because of deforestation, which is when forests are cut down. This loss of habitat is a big problem for Bridges's degu and is causing their numbers to decline.
