Brienne Alexandra Minor was born on November 25, 1997. She is an American tennis player. Brienne played college tennis at the University of Michigan. In 2017, she won a big college tennis tournament. It was called the NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship. She was the first African-American woman to win this singles title. Winning this tournament also gave her a special entry into the 2017 US Open.

Starting Young

Brienne grew up in Mundelein, Illinois. She started playing tennis when she was just four years old. She loved the sport from a young age.

High School Success

Brienne went to Carmel High School. In her final year, she had an amazing season. She won every single match she played. This led her to win a state championship for her school.

Playing for Michigan

On November 13, 2014, Brienne decided to play college tennis. She chose the University of Michigan. She was one of the top young tennis players in the country. She was ranked as the 15th best recruit.

Freshman Year Highlights

In her first year at Michigan, Brienne did very well. She won 36 matches and only lost 10. Her great playing earned her spots in two big college tournaments. These were the National Collegiate Athletic Association singles and doubles tournaments. She also received special honors for her performance.

Winning a National Title

Brienne had an incredible second year at Michigan. She won the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Singles title. This was the first time a Michigan player had ever won this championship. She beat Belinda Woolcock from the University of Florida in the final match.

A Historic Win

Brienne's victory was very special. She became the first African-American woman to win this singles title. She was also the first black athlete to win a singles title since Arthur Ashe in 1965. Because she won, Brienne received a special invitation. She got to play in the main part of the 2017 US Open. She also earned another All-American honor.

In 2017, Brienne made her first big professional tennis appearance. She played in the 2017 US Open. She faced Ons Jabeur in her first match. Brienne played hard but lost the match.

Brienne's parents are Kevin and Michelle Minor. She has two older sisters, Jasmine and Kristina. Brienne is studying sports management in college. She is a big fan of the pop singer Beyoncé. Her best friend, Caroline Nonnenmacher, even gave her a fun nickname: "Briyoncé."
