Brixey is a small, former community located in northern Ozark County, Missouri, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place with a group of homes or buildings, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
Brixey is about 1.6 miles south of Route 95 on Route N. It's also roughly 10 miles north of Gainesville.
A Look at Brixey's Past
For many years, Brixey had a country store and a post office. These places were important gathering spots for the people living nearby. The store and post office were housed in the same building.
The Post Office and Store
The Brixey post office first opened in 1917. It served the community for many decades. However, it closed down sometime in the early 21st century. The country store, which was in the same building, also closed at that time.
Today, the old store building and post office are empty. Many of the houses along the main road are also vacant. Even though the physical buildings are closed, the Brixey name and its zip code, 65618, are still used for mail delivery in the area.
How Brixey Got Its Name
The community of Brixey gets its name from a nearby natural feature. It is named after Brixey Creek. Sometimes, the name was even spelled "Brixy."
