Broad Ripple Village is a lively area in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is one of seven special "cultural districts" in the city. Broad Ripple is about 6 miles (10 km) north of downtown Indianapolis. It is located in Washington Township, Marion County, Indiana.

Broad Ripple was first mapped out in 1837. It became an official town in 1894. Later, in 1922, it became part of the City of Indianapolis. The neighborhood is known for being a diverse place where people from many backgrounds live and work.

Broad Ripple has a long history, especially with its schools. The first public school in the area was built around 1843. More schools followed as the community grew.

Broad Ripple High School's Story

Broad Ripple High School started as a two-year program in 1886. It grew to a four-year program by the mid-1890s. The high school shared buildings with the grade school for many years. In 1923, after Broad Ripple became part of Indianapolis, the high school joined the Indianapolis Public Schools system. Broad Ripple High School served the community for many decades before closing its doors in 2018.

Becoming Part of Indianapolis

Broad Ripple officially became part of the city of Indianapolis in June 1922. This happened after several earlier attempts to join the city.

Broad Ripple is a hub for culture and activities. It offers many places for people to gather and enjoy themselves.

Broad Ripple Park: A Green Space

Broad Ripple Park is a large 62-acre (25-hectare) park. It sits right next to the White River. The park has many features for fun and exercise. You can find an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and baseball fields. There are also playgrounds, picnic areas, and a dog park. A wooded area and fitness path are perfect for nature lovers. The park even has a boat ramp for river access.

Local Newspapers: Keeping the Community Informed

Broad Ripple has had its own local newspapers over the years. The Village Sampler was the first monthly newspaper for the area. It started in 1987 and shared local news until 1998. Later, in 2004, a free newspaper called The Broad Ripple Gazette began. It was created by a local resident, Alan Hague.

Broad Ripple is well-connected to other parts of Indianapolis. This makes it easy for people to travel to and from the village.

Public Transportation Options

You can get to downtown Indianapolis from Broad Ripple using public bus rapid transit. The IndyGo's Red Line (Route 90) runs through the village. The Broad Ripple Station is located on College Avenue. Other IndyGo bus routes also serve the area. These routes connect Broad Ripple to many other neighborhoods in Indianapolis.

Bikeshare for Easy Travel

If you like to bike, Indiana Pacers Bikeshare is available in Broad Ripple. This service started in September 2019. It allows you to rent bikes from docking stations. Two of the system's 50 stations are located right in Broad Ripple. This makes it easy to explore the area on two wheels.
