History of Brookdale

Early Days: Stone House Plains

The first English name for Brookdale was Stone House Plains. This name came from a large rock formation. People called it the "stone house" or "great rock." It was big enough to be a shelter. This rock was located north of where Bellevue Avenue and Newell Drive are today. The rock was still there in 1802, but it was removed soon after. "Plains" referred to the flat land near the Yantecaw River. This river flows through the area.

First Settlers and Farms

Around the early 1700s, people started to settle in the area. One of the first settlers might have been Abraham Van Giesen. By 1750, two brothers, Garrabrant and Teunis Garrabrant, owned large pieces of land. Their land was near Brookdale Park, Bellevue Avenue, and Broad Street. Around 1730, Alexander Cockefair bought a large farm. It was near the Yantacaw Brook, Broad Street, and Watchung Avenue. The Sigler and Coeyman families also had early farms in Stone House Plains. The families of these early settlers ran farms and businesses for over 200 years.

Community Growth and New Name

For many years, Dutch was the main language for residents. In 1795, the Dutch Reformed Church of Stone House Plains was started. This church became a central place for the community. The first church building was built in 1802. It burned down and was rebuilt around 1857. This church is now called Brookdale Reformed Church. The Morris family built a mill pond on the Yantacaw Brook. In the mid-1800s, the first school was opened. In 1873, the community voted to change its name to Brookdale. This happened just before mail delivery started.

Modern Development

After World War I, much of the farmland became places for homes. The Clark Thread Company bought the Morris Pond. They built a factory next to it for coloring thread. Later, the Scientific Glass Company used this factory. Parts of the Cockefair farm were turned into a golf course. A junior high school, now Bloomfield Middle School, was also built there. Essex County bought land and created Brookdale Park. In 1968, the Lummus Company, an engineering firm, moved into northern Brookdale.
