Brooke Gabrielle Ligertwood (born Brooke Fraser on 15 December 1983) is a talented singer and songwriter from New Zealand. She uses both her original name, Brooke Fraser, and her married name, Brooke Ligertwood, for her music.
Brooke became well-known after signing with Sony BMG in 2002. Her first album, What to Do with Daylight (2003), was a big hit. She followed this with Albertine (2006) and Flags (2010). All three albums reached number one in New Zealand. Her song "Something in the Water" also became a number one single. Later, she released Brutal Romantic (2014) and live albums like Seven (2022) and Eight (2023). These recent albums were released under her married name, Brooke Ligertwood.
Brooke also joined the Australian Christian music group Hillsong Worship. She wrote and performed many songs with them. She was part of the group from 2016 until 2023. During this time, she performed on popular songs like "Who You Say I Am" and "King of Kings". She also co-wrote and performed "What a Beautiful Name" live. This song won a Grammy Award in 2018.

Early Life and Music Start
Brooke Fraser was born in Wellington, New Zealand. She is the oldest of three children. Her father, Bernie Fraser, was a rugby player. Brooke grew up in Naenae, a town in New Zealand.
She started taking piano lessons when she was seven years old. By age twelve, she was already writing her own songs. At fifteen, she taught herself to play the acoustic guitar. Brooke also wrote for a magazine called Soul Purpose and later became its editor. In 2002, when she was 18, she signed a big music deal with Sony Music. She then moved to Auckland to focus on her music career.
Musical Journey
2002–2004: First Album Success
Brooke's first album, What to Do with Daylight, came out in New Zealand in late 2003. It quickly became number one and sold very well. The album sold over 105,000 copies in New Zealand. It stayed on the music charts for over a year. All five songs released from the album made it into the top twenty in New Zealand. The album also did well in Australia, earning a gold award.
After her first album, Brooke toured with famous artists. She performed with American singer John Mayer and English rock artist David Bowie in New Zealand.
2005–2009: Albertine and Hillsong Worship
In 2005, before making her next album, Brooke visited Rwanda. She met a young girl named Albertine, who had been affected by a terrible event. Brooke wrote a song about her, which became the title track for her second album. For this album, Brooke worked with new American musicians in Los Angeles.
Her second album, Albertine, was released in New Zealand in December 2006. It quickly sold many copies. The album was released internationally in 2007. It also became Brooke's first album released in the United States in 2008. It was very popular online and entered the Billboard 200 chart. In 2008, Brooke went on a big world tour.
Brooke joined Hillsong Church in 2005. She later became part of their worship band, Hillsong Worship. She used her married name, Brooke Ligertwood, for this group. She helped write songs for their albums, starting with Mighty to Save in 2006. She left Hillsong Worship after their 2010 album, A Beautiful Exchange.
2010–2015: Flags and Brutal Romantic
Brooke's third album, Flags, was released in October 2010. It reached number one in New Zealand and did very well in Australia and the US. The album's first song, "Something in the Water", became a huge hit worldwide. It was played a lot on the radio and sold millions of copies.
Music critics praised Flags for its beautiful lyrics and wide range of sounds. After Flags, Brooke signed with a new record label. She started working on her fourth album. In 2014, she released a new song called "Psychosocial." This song showed a change in her music style, moving towards more electronic sounds. Her single "Kings and Queens" was released in September 2014.
Her fourth album, Brutal Romantic, came out in November 2014. Brooke produced this album herself with David Kosten. In 2015, Brooke performed a song called "Team, Ball, Player, Thing" with other New Zealand artists. This song was for a good cause, helping research for Batten disease.
2016–Present: Return to Worship Music
In 2016, Brooke released a song called "Therapy." This song was part of her first collection album, A Sides. She released another collection album, B Sides, in 2018.
Brooke returned to Hillsong Worship for their 2016 live album, Let There Be Light. She co-wrote and sang the main vocals on "What a Beautiful Name". This song won a Grammy Award in 2018. Billboard magazine named it the top Christian Song of 2017.
On February 25, 2022, Brooke released Seven. This was her first live solo album and her first solo work using her married name, Brooke Ligertwood. In April 2023, she released Siete, which had Spanish versions of songs from Seven. Her first studio album in nine years, Eight, was released on October 20, 2023. She released this album under her married name as well. Brooke shared that she had stepped away from Hillsong Church again due to some big changes within the church.
On June 22, 2024, Brooke performed a special concert with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in Auckland. This concert had the largest crowd ever for a solo New Zealand artist at that venue. On August 8, 2024, she released Infinity, a live album with songs from Eight. On November 23, 2024, she released a live version of "Shadowfeet" on her YouTube channel. This video was recorded at the Spark Arena concert with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
Personal Life
After her first album's success, Brooke moved to Sydney, Australia, in 2004. On March 17, 2008, she married Scott Ligertwood in Sydney. They moved to Los Angeles in 2010. Brooke continued to use "Brooke Fraser" for her solo music until her album Seven in 2022. Since then, she has used both "Brooke Fraser" and "Brooke Ligertwood."
In March 2015, Brooke announced she was expecting her first child. Her daughter was born on September 18, 2015. Another daughter was born on July 10, 2017. Brooke currently lives in Los Angeles.
Music Style and Inspirations
Brooke Fraser's music often includes Christian ideas and themes. Her work with Hillsong Worship allowed her to share her faith through songs. Her music style is usually folk-pop, but she has also added more modern pop sounds to her recent work.
Brooke is known for writing her own songs. She is described as a very hardworking artist who puts a lot of effort into her music. This song helped raise money for research into Batten disease.
