Early Life and Music Beginnings
Brooke Fraser is the oldest of three children. Her father, Bernie Fraser, was a famous rugby player for the All Blacks. Brooke grew up in Naenae, Lower Hutt, New Zealand.
She started taking piano lessons when she was seven years old and continued until she was seventeen. By age twelve, she was already writing her own songs. At fifteen, she taught herself to play the acoustic guitar. Brooke also wrote for a magazine called Soul Purpose and became its editor in 2002. Soon after, she moved to Auckland to focus on her music career. In 2002, when she was just 18, Brooke signed a big music deal with Sony Music.
Musical Journey
First Album Success: What to Do With Daylight
Brooke Fraser's first album, What to Do with Daylight, came out in New Zealand in late 2003. It immediately went to number one on the charts and quickly sold many copies. The album ended up selling over 105,000 copies in New Zealand and stayed on the charts for more than a year. All five songs released from the album became top twenty hits in New Zealand. The album also did well in Australia, earning a gold record there.
After her first album, Brooke toured Australia and New Zealand with famous artists like John Mayer and David Bowie.
Albertine and Joining Hillsong Worship
In 2005, before working on her next album, Brooke visited Rwanda. There, she met a young girl named Albertine, who had survived a difficult time. Brooke was so inspired that she wrote a song about her, which became the title track for her second album. For this album, Brooke worked with new American musicians in Los Angeles.
Her second album, Albertine, was released in New Zealand in December 2006. It quickly became a double platinum album, meaning it sold a lot of copies. The album was released internationally in 2007 and even made it onto the Billboard 200 chart in the United States in 2008. Brooke then went on a big world tour.
Brooke became a member of Hillsong Church in 2005 and later joined their worship band, Hillsong Worship. She used her married name, Brooke Ligertwood, for her work with the group. She helped write songs like "None But Jesus" for their albums. She was part of Hillsong Worship until 2010.
Flags and Brutal Romantic
Brooke's third album, Flags, was released in October 2010. It quickly reached number one in New Zealand and did very well in Australia and the US. Flags sold over 30,000 copies in New Zealand and was one of the best-selling albums of 2010. The first song from the album, "Something in the Water", became a huge hit worldwide. It was played a lot on radio stations and sold many copies in different countries.
Critics praised Flags, with one magazine calling it "a wonder" and "drenched in beauty."
After Flags, Brooke started working on her fourth album. In 2014, she released a new song called "Psychosocial," which showed a change in her music style. She started using more electronic sounds instead of just acoustic guitar. Her fourth album, Brutal Romantic, came out in November 2014. Brooke produced the album herself with David Kosten. In 2015, she also performed a charity song called "Team, Ball, Player, Thing" to support research into Batten disease.
Recent Music and Hillsong Worship
In 2016, Brooke released a new song called "Therapy," which was part of her first collection of songs, A Sides. She released another collection, B Sides, in 2018.
Brooke returned to Hillsong Worship in 2016. She co-wrote and sang lead vocals on the song "What a Beautiful Name" for their live album Let There Be Light. This song became incredibly popular. In 2018, Brooke and the group won a Grammy Award for "What a Beautiful Name." Billboard magazine even named it the top Christian song of 2017.
In February 2022, Brooke released Seven, her first live solo album. This was also her first solo work released under her married name, Brooke Ligertwood. In April 2023, she released Siete, an EP with Spanish versions of songs from Seven. Her latest studio album, Eight, came out in October 2023, also under her married name. Brooke has since stepped away from Hillsong Church.
In June 2024, she performed a special concert with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in Auckland. It was the biggest crowd ever for a solo New Zealand artist at that venue. In August 2024, she released Infinity, a live album with songs from Eight. She also released a live video of her song "Shadowfeet" in November 2024.
Personal Life
After her first album became successful, Brooke moved to Sydney, Australia, in 2004. On 17 March 2008, she married Scott Ligertwood in Sydney. For her solo music career, she continued to use her maiden name, "Brooke Fraser," until 2022.
In March 2015, Brooke announced she was expecting her first child. Her daughter was born on 18 September 2015. Another daughter was born on 10 July 2017. Brooke currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
