Bluff Beach Davit

Brown Point (also called Point Brown) is a piece of land that sticks out into the sea, like a small peninsula. It's located in the Australian state of South Australia. You can find it on the west coast of the Yorke Peninsula, looking out over Hardwicke Bay. Brown Point is about 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) west of a town called Minlaton. Since 1999, it has been part of the area known as Bluff Beach.

What are the Davits at Brown Point?

Brown Point is famous for its special boat lifting system, known as "Davits." These davits are a unique sight and a popular spot for tourists to visit. You might even see pictures of them on postcards and souvenirs!

How the Davits Worked

The davits were a clever way to move boats up and down the cliff, from the land to the water. It was a manual system, meaning people operated it by hand. It used strong upright poles, cables, and supports.

George Parsons and Fred Schwarz first introduced this winching method in the 1920s. It was a very safe and handy way to protect boats from bad weather.

Davits Today

Over the years, boat designs changed. Today, most boats are made of fiberglass because they are easier to look after than older wooden boats. Also, trailers are now used to launch boats into the water, which has replaced the old davit system. Even though they aren't used for boats anymore, the davits at Brown Point are still a cool part of history and a great place to visit!
