Helping Communities: The Settlement Movement
The settlement movement began in the 1880s. Its main idea was to help rich and poor people live closer together. The goal was to create a stronger community. "Settlement houses" were built in poor city areas. Middle-class volunteers would live there. They hoped to share their knowledge and culture. They also wanted to help reduce poverty for their neighbors. The university extension movement also helped. It brought good education to people in cities. Toynbee Hall was an early and famous example of such a place. It was started by Samuel and Henrietta Barnett.
A New Start in Walworth

In 1902, it moved to its own building at 62 Camberwell Road.
