Browning Hill, also called Browning Mountain by local people, is a special place in Indiana. It stands 928 feet (about 283 meters) tall, making it the 53rd highest peak in the state. This hill is found in Brown County, close to the small town of Story.

Part of Browning Hill is inside the Hoosier National Forest. The United States Forest Service has marked it as a special area because it has a "relatively undisturbed" old-growth forest. This means the trees there are very old and have not been cut down or changed much by people.

What Makes Browning Hill Special?

Browning Hill is known for its mysterious feel. It looks down over the old, almost empty town of Elkinsville. At the top of the hill, there's a unique area with many large limestone rocks. People sometimes call this spot "Indiana's Stonehenge" because it looks a bit like the famous stone circle in England.

The Mystery of the Boulders

Many people wonder how these big stones got to the top of Browning Hill. Some ideas suggest it might have been a special place for Native American ceremonies long ago. Others think the stones were part of a cabin's foundation.

However, a naturalist (someone who studies nature) has another idea. They believe that early settlers might have dug up these stones to use for building. But then, for some reason, they left the stones behind when they moved to other places. This explanation seems the most likely for how the "field of boulders" appeared on Browning Hill.
