Brownstown is a town in Jackson County, Indiana, United States. It is the main town, also known as the county seat, of Jackson County. In 2020, about 3,025 people lived there. The town was named after Jacob Brown, a general from the War of 1812.

History of Brownstown
Brownstown was officially planned on April 8, 1816. This was even before Indiana became a state! Brownstown became the county seat of Jackson County in November 1816. It took over from Fort Vallonia, which had only been the county seat for a few months.
The land for the Jackson County Courthouse was given by Colonel John Ketcham. He wanted it used specifically for the courthouse. This important building is located right in the center of Brownstown. In 2011, the Jackson County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place recognized for its history.
Where is Brownstown?
Brownstown covers about 1.6 square miles (4.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit of water.
The town is located near the East Fork of the White River. It is also close to the Jackson-Washington State Forest. The larger Hoosier National Forest is nearby too. This means Brownstown is surrounded by beautiful nature.
