Brownstown was officially planned on April 8, 1816. This was even before Indiana became a state! Brownstown became the county seat of Jackson County in November 1816. It took over from Fort Vallonia, which had only been the county seat for a few months.

The land for the Jackson County Courthouse was given by Colonel John Ketcham. He wanted it used specifically for the courthouse. This important building is located right in the center of Brownstown. In 2011, the Jackson County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place recognized for its history.
