The Brownsville Northside Historic District is a special area in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. It's like a time capsule showing how the town looked long ago. This district is in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It sits right next to another important area, the Brownsville Commercial Historic District.

What is a Historic District?

A historic district is a neighborhood or group of buildings that are important because of their history or architecture. The Brownsville Northside Historic District has 188 buildings and two special sites that tell a story. These places are called "contributing" because they add to the district's historical value.

Most of the buildings in this district are homes. But you can also find some shops and nine churches here. The two special sites are old cemeteries connected to two of the churches.

Exploring the Northside District

The buildings in the Northside Historic District show off many popular styles from the 1800s and early 1900s.

Old Buildings and Cool Styles

One of the oldest buildings is Brashear's Tavern, built around 1797. Imagine how many stories that building could tell! There are also five other buildings that are very old, dating back to between 1815 and 1840.

You can see different types of architecture here. Some homes are built in the Colonial Revival style. This style brings back ideas from early American colonial homes. Others are Bungalow or American Craftsman style. These homes often have simple designs and natural materials. You might also spot buildings in the Greek Revival style. This style uses columns and grand entrances, like ancient Greek temples.

Important Places in the District

Two very important places are located within this historic district. They are so special that they are listed separately on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the St. Peter's Church and Bowman's Castle. These buildings have their own unique history and architecture.

Why is it Important?

The Brownsville Northside Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The National Register is a list of places in the United States that are important to our country's history. Being on this list helps protect these special places for future generations to enjoy and learn from. It means the district is recognized for its historical and architectural value.
