Bruce McCray: From College to Pro Football
Bruce Edward McCray was born on October 27, 1963. He grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and went to Wichita East High School.
After high school, Bruce played college football at Independence Community College. He played there for two years, from 1983 to 1984. Later, he moved on to Western Illinois University. He was a key player for the Western Illinois Leathernecks football team from 1985 to 1986.
Playing in the NFL
After finishing college, Bruce McCray hoped to join a professional team. He was not chosen in the 1987 NFL draft, which means no team picked him right away. However, the Dallas Cowboys signed him on April 30, 1987. This gave him a chance to show his skills. But he was later released by the team on July 28, 1987.
On the very same day, the Chicago Bears picked him up. This meant he got another chance to play in the NFL. He was released again on September 1, but the Bears re-signed him on September 23. This happened during a time when many NFL players were on strike. During this strike, Bruce started in all three games for the Bears as a left cornerback. He even made an exciting play by catching an opponent's pass and running it back 23 yards for a touchdown! After the strike ended, he was released by the Bears on October 22, 1987.
In 1988, Bruce McCray played one game for the Chicago Bruisers. This team was part of the Arena Football League (AFL). In that game, he made two solo tackles and broke up one pass. In the AFL, players often played both offense and defense. This was called "ironman rules." Bruce was listed as both a wide receiver and a defensive back during his time in the AFL.
