Bruno Bozzetto (born March 3, 1938) is a famous Italian cartoon animator and film director. He creates many short animated films. These films often share ideas about society or make fun of things in a clever way.
Bozzetto made his first animated short film, "Tapum! the weapons' story," in 1958. He was only 20 years old. His most famous character is a little man named "Signor Rossi" (which means Mr. Rossi in English). Mr. Rossi has been in many short cartoons. He also starred in three full-length movies: Mr. Rossi Looks for Happiness (1976), Mr. Rossi's Dreams (1977), and Mr. Rossi's Vacation (1977).
Biography
In 1965, Bozzetto made his first full-length animated movie. It was called West and Soda. This film was a funny copy, or parody, of American Western movies. In 1968, Bozzetto released VIP my Brother Superman. This movie was a parody of superhero stories.
However, his most well-known work is likely the 1976 movie Allegro non troppo. This film is a collection of short animated pieces. Each piece is set to classical music. It is similar to Walt Disney's Fantasia. But Bozzetto's film is more humorous and tells more complex stories.
After a long break, Bozzetto made a live-action film in 1987. It was called Under the Chinese Restaurant. This was his last full-length movie for a while.
In 1990, he released Grasshoppers (Cavallette). This short film was nominated for an Academy Award. It was considered for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1991.
In 1995, he created an animated short for the What a Cartoon! series. It was called Help?. In 1996, he worked with RAI, an Italian TV company. Together, they created The Spaghetti Family. This was a cartoon TV series with 26 episodes.
Since 1999, Bozzetto has focused on Flash animation. This is a type of animation made using computer software. His work "Europe and Italy" is very famous. It is a smart and funny cartoon about the differences between European and Italian cultures. This cartoon even helped inspire the Polandball meme.
