Bruno Covas Lopes (born April 7, 1980 – died May 16, 2021) was a Brazilian lawyer, economist, and politician. He was a member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). Bruno Covas served as the mayor of São Paulo city from 2018 until his death in 2021.
Covas was the grandson of Mário Covas, who was a former governor of the state of São Paulo. Before becoming mayor, Bruno Covas was the national leader of the PSDB Youth group. He also served as São Paulo state secretary for the environment. In October 2016, Covas was elected vice mayor of São Paulo. He ran alongside João Doria, who was the main candidate for mayor. In April 2018, Covas became mayor after João Doria left the job to run for state governor.
In October 2019, Covas was diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer. This is a type of cancer that affects the digestive system. He continued to work as mayor while receiving treatment. In November 2020, his health condition was stable. Covas was then re-elected as mayor, winning against Guilherme Boulos. In May 2021, Covas was admitted to the hospital because his cancer had spread. He passed away on May 16, 2021. He was the first mayor of São Paulo to die while in office.

Who Was Bruno Covas?
Bruno Covas Lopes was born on April 7, 1980, in Santos. This is a beach town near the big city of São Paulo. His parents were Renata Covas Lopes and Pedro Lopes.
His grandfather, Mário Covas, was a very important politician. Mário Covas was one of the people who started the PSDB in 1988. He was also the governor of the state of São Paulo from 1995 until he died in 2001.
Early Life and Education
As a child, Bruno Covas went to schools in Santos. He often traveled with his grandfather to Brasília, the capital city, when his grandfather was a senator. In 1995, Covas moved to São Paulo to study at the Bandeirantes School. He lived with his grandfather at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, which is where the state governor lives.
Bruno Covas studied law at the University of São Paulo (USP). He earned his law degree in 2002. Later, in 2005, he also earned a degree in economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP).
Starting His Political Journey
Bruno Covas officially joined the PSDB in 1998 when he was 18 years old. He held several important roles in PSDB Youth, which is the party's group for young people. He was elected as its first secretary in 1999. Then he became the state president in 2003 and the national president in 2007. He served as the national president until 2011.
Covas began his public political career in 2004. He ran for vice mayor of Santos. Even though his team didn't win, this was his first step into public office.
From State to Federal Politics
From 2005 to 2006, he worked as an assistant in the Legislative Assembly. In 2006, he ran for State Deputy and won with many votes. He was known as a very active deputy.
Covas was the president of the Committee of Finances and Budget for two years. He also worked on committees for Human Rights and Consumer Rights. He helped create laws, including the state budget for 2009 and 2010. He also worked on the Nota Fiscal Paulista, which helped reduce taxes for citizens.
In 2010, Covas was re-elected as State Deputy. He received the most votes of any candidate for the São Paulo State Assembly that year. In 2011, he was appointed as the State Secretary of the Environment. He left his role as State Deputy to take on this new job.
In 2014, Bruno Covas was elected as a federal deputy. This meant he worked in the national government. He voted on important national issues during his time there.
Becoming Mayor of São Paulo

In 2016, Covas was elected vice mayor of São Paulo. He ran with João Doria, who won the mayoral election. To become vice mayor, Covas resigned from his federal deputy position. On April 7, 2018, his 38th birthday, Covas became the mayor. This happened after João Doria left the office to run for governor.
In the 2020 mayoral election, Covas ran for mayor again. He was elected mayor, with Ricardo Nunes as his vice mayoral candidate. Covas won the election with a large number of votes, beating Guilherme Boulos.
His Health Challenges and Passing
In October 2019, Bruno Covas was diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer. This type of cancer affects the stomach and other digestive organs. He started receiving chemotherapy treatment. Even with his illness, he continued to serve as mayor.
In November 2020, doctors said his condition was stable. He continued to receive treatment. In June 2020, he also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. He recovered after isolating himself for two weeks.
By April 2021, his cancer had spread to his liver and bones. He was admitted to the hospital again. He continued to work for a while. On May 2, 2021, he was readmitted and announced he would take a leave from office. Vice Mayor Ricardo Nunes took over his duties.
Bruno Covas passed away on May 16, 2021, at the age of 41. He died from gastrointestinal cancer in São Paulo. He was buried in Paquetá Cemetery in Santos later that day. He was the first mayor of São Paulo to die while still in office.

Bruno Covas married Karen Ichiba, a college friend, in 2004. They had a son named Tomás in 2005. The couple divorced in 2014. His son often joined him during his time as mayor and during election campaigns.
