Bryce Park is a small, green park shaped like a triangle in Washington, D.C.. It's located in the Cathedral Heights neighborhood. The park is found where three streets meet: Massachusetts Avenue, Wisconsin Avenue, and Garfield Street.

This park is about half an acre in size (2,369 square meters). The National Park Service takes care of it. Even though it's managed as part of Rock Creek Park, it's not directly connected to it. Bryce Park is across Massachusetts Avenue from the famous Washington National Cathedral. It offers nice pathways and benches where people can relax and walk.

Park History

When Washington, D.C., was first being created, the area where Bryce Park now stands was mostly woods and farms. A special government group, the National Capital Park Commission, bought this land in 1930. They bought it to create parks and green spaces for the city.

On November 17, 1965, Bryce Park was officially named and opened. A government official named John A. Carver, Jr., who was an Under Secretary of the Interior, led the dedication. The park was named in honor of James Bryce.

Who Was James Bryce?

James Bryce was a very smart and important person from Britain. He was a professor at Oxford University, a historian who studied the past, and a politician. He became well-known in America after he wrote a book called The American Commonwealth in 1888. This book helped people understand the American government and society better.

Later, from 1907 to 1913, James Bryce served as the British Ambassador to the United States. This meant he was Britain's top representative in America, helping to keep good relations between the two countries.

What You'll Find at the Park
