What Does the Station Look Like?
The Bucksport Railroad Station is made of wood and has a classic old-time look. It's about one and a half stories tall. The roof has wide edges that stick out, supported by special wooden brackets. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards. The building sits on a strong foundation made of granite stone.
The side of the station that faced the train tracks had seven sections.
- The first section had a window for the ticket office.
- The next four sections had windows and a door for people waiting for the train.
- The last two sections had a window and a wide door for loading and unloading cargo.
The side facing Main Street looks similar. The ends of the building each have three windows.
A Look Back: The Railway's Story
The European and North American Railway (E&NR) started in 1851. Their big idea was to connect Portland, Maine all the way to Canso, Nova Scotia by train. This would make sea travel shorter between North America and Europe. It would also help move goods between different parts of what is now Canada.
The main train line went through Bangor, Maine. In the early 1870s, people in Bucksport asked for their own train line. So, the E&NR built a smaller track, called a spur line, to Bucksport. This station was built in 1874 to serve that new line.
The E&NR company didn't last very long. After a few years, the Bucksport line was run by local groups. Then, in 1884, it became part of a bigger company called the Maine Central Railroad.
What is it Now?
Today, the old Bucksport Railroad Station is no longer used for trains. Instead, it's the home of the Bucksport Historical Society. They have offices there and a museum. You can visit the museum to learn all about the history of Bucksport and the surrounding area!
