Delmore William "Buddy" Daye (1928 – October 1995) was a Canadian professional boxer and a dedicated community leader. He was known for his impressive boxing career and for working hard to improve life in his community.

Buddy Daye's Early Life and Boxing Career

Buddy Daye was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, in 1928. When he was a young man, he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia. For a short time, he worked as a merchant mariner, sailing on ships.

Buddy Daye was a very successful boxer. He fought in 88 matches, winning 81 of them! An amazing 71 of his wins were by knockout. On June 30, 1964, Buddy Daye achieved a big goal: he won the Canadian Super Featherweight title. He held this important title for a while before losing it on January 15, 1966. His last boxing match was on September 10, 1966.

In 1981, Buddy Daye was honored for his achievements. He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. This means his contributions to sports in Nova Scotia are remembered and celebrated.

Community Work and Public Service

Beyond boxing, Buddy Daye was a passionate community activist in Halifax's North End. He strongly supported the community of Africville, helping to make sure its history and people were recognized.

Buddy Daye also entered the world of politics. He ran for the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party in the Halifax Needham area during the 1967 provincial election.

In 1990, Buddy Daye made history. He became the first African Nova Scotian to serve as the Sergeant-at-Arms for the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The Sergeant-at-Arms helps keep order and security in the legislative building. He served in this important role until he passed away in October 1995.

Legacy and Remembrance

Buddy Daye's contributions are still remembered today. In 1996, his photograph was placed as a permanent memorial in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. This honors his service and impact.

In June 2006, a street in the North End of Halifax was renamed in his memory. This street, located between Gottingen and Maynard streets, helps ensure that Buddy Daye's name and his dedication to his community live on.
