What is Buffington?

Buffington is known for its history. It was once the site of an important old fort. Today, you won't see the fort itself. Only a special historical marker helps people remember where it once stood. This marker is found along State Route 20.

The Story of Fort Buffington

Fort Buffington was a military fort built a long time ago. It was one of several forts known as the Cherokee Removal Forts. These forts were used in 1838. Their purpose was to gather the Cherokee people. The Cherokee were a large Native American tribe. This gathering happened before a very difficult journey. This journey is known as the Trail of Tears.

What Happened to the Fort?

After 1838, Fort Buffington was no longer needed. Over time, it was either taken apart or simply fell into ruin. This means it slowly crumbled away. Now, only the historical marker remains. It helps us remember the fort's place in history. It reminds us of the important events that happened there.
